About the project
In Afghanistan, women are enduring an unprecedented crisis. Since the Taliban’s return to power, women have been stripped of their basic rights. The regime’s oppressive policies have erased women from public life, barring them from schools, workplaces and even humanitarian roles, thus confining them to their homes. They cannot show their faces, move freely without a male chaperone, and their autonomy and voices have been silenced. The result is a life of isolation, financial dependence, and constant fear - a reality of
gender apartheid that has devastated their sense of identity and purpose.
A Mental Health Emergency
This environment of oppression has led to a mental health crisis among Afghan women:
- Nearly 70% of Afghan women suffer from severe anxiety and depression(VOA News, 2023).
- Afghanistan is one of the few countries where female suicide rates are higher than male rates, with women and girls as young as 13 taking their own lives out of despair (The Guardian, 2023).
- 85% of Afghan women report a decline in mental health, citing isolation, loss of purpose, and the trauma of constant fear (UN News, 2024).
The crisis is dire, but there is hope.
With your support, we can provide Afghan women the care they desperately need.
Each life lost represents a profound tragedy—for the individual as well as for families and communities left shattered in their grief.
Behind every statistic is a woman with dreams, potential, and untapped contributions to society, extinguished too soon by the crushing weight of hopelessness. These deaths are a devastating reminder of the human cost of oppression, and the ripple effects of such loss are immeasurable.
But it doesn’t have to be this way.
With access to mental health support, many of these women can find relief, resilience, and the strength to keep going. Psycho-social interventions are not just services - they are lifelines that can help women reconnect with themselves and reclaim their futures. By acting now, we can save lives and restore hope.
